Making their first playoff appearance since 2003, the Marlins topped the Chicago Cubs 2-0 on Friday afternoon, sweeping the short three-game Wild Card series to advance to the National League Divisional Series.
The Marlins, who lost 105 games last season and had 18 players miss time early this season due to COVID-19, will face the Atlanta Braves in the next round of the postseason. The five-game NLDS will begin Tuesday and be played at a neutral site in Houston, Texas.
While the Marlins have endured plenty of skeptics throughout the season, manager Don Mattingly said the team always believed they were capable of making noise.
