Today in Central Florida sports history: Orlando resident Payne Stewart edges Phil Mickelson to win U.S. Open

Payne Stewart captured his third major championship in stirring fashion, then passed along a piece of wisdom in the moments after his victory.

The Orlando resident sank a 15-foot par putt on the 18th hole to beat Phil Mickelson by one stroke and win the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 on this date in 1999.

A statue of Stewart famously celebrating his winning putt — his right arm extended with a clenched fist and his right leg off the ground — now stands behind the 18th green.

The moment became especially poignant when Stewart, who took the lead on the 17th hole, offered words of encouragement in trying to help Mickelson keep the loss in perspective.
