Today in Central Florida sports history: Gators softball go back-to-back in WCWS

When coach Tim Walton arrived in 2006, UF had not won much in softball. This at a school where competing for titles is a way of life.

Five years ago today, Walton’s program ruled the sport, becoming just the third school to win back-to-back national softball championships. With a 4-1 win against Michigan, the Gators joined UCLA and Arizona, two schools located in the heart of softball country. Both Gator championships happened to be clinched on June 3.

“All I heard about growing up was UCLA and Arizona,” UF catcher Aubree Munro, a native of Southern California, told the Orlando Sentinel in 2015.
