Today in Central Florida sports history: Darryl Dawkins goes No. 5 overall in NBA Draft out of Evans High

The Evans High School graduate become the first player to make the jump from high school straight to the NBA upon being drafted in the first round on May 29, 1975.

Dawkins averaged 25.8 points and 12 rebounds and led a talent-laden Evans team to a state championship in his senior year at Evans. He was then selected No. 5 overall in the NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Standing at 6-foot-11, Dawkins made his mark as both an imposing presence in the paint, known for thunderous backboard-shattering dunks, and as a charming showman nicknamed “Chocolate Thunder” who was beloved by fans.
