Today in Central Florida sports history: Bo Jackson shuns Tampa Bay Bucs as No. 1 pick

But 34 years ago today, the Bucs took a big gamble selecting Auburn tailback Bo Jackson with No. 1 pick in the NFL draft despite Jackson’s warning team officials he would not play for owner Hugh Culverhouse.

Jackson was true to his word and opened to play professional baseball, delaying his NFL career for one season. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay lost out on a once in a generation talent and continued its losing ways for years to come.

During his pursuit of Jackson, the Bucs owner sent his private jet to pick up the reigning Heisman Trophy winner for a physical and a visit.
