Tennessee transfer Deandre Johnson wants to improve draft stock while winning with hometown Hurricanes

Of all the Miami Hurricanes’ offseason additions between incoming recruits and the three transfers, defensive end Deandre Johnson could end up being the most important one in the 2021 fall season.

Johnson, a former Miami Southridge High standout that returns home after spending four years at Tennessee, fills a major void at a position where Miami’s two starters from 2020, Jaelan Phillips and Quincy Roche, are off to the NFL.

The 6-foot-3, 246-pound edge rusher brings experience to a unit that will otherwise be very young. He led the Volunteers with 4 1/2 sacks in 2020. A preview of the type of game he’s capable of having: Johnson was named SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his game at South Carolina on Sept.
