Despite incessant pressure deep into stoppage time, the Portland Thorns and Chicago Red Stars couldn’t find the net during a scoreless draw on Wednesday in the NWSL Challenge Cup in Utah.
Chicago fielded a lineup of fresh faces, with veteran stars such as Julie Ertz, Casey Short and Alyssa Naeher taking the game off to rest. This gave valuable minutes to second-year keeper Emily Boyd.
Portland fielded a more experienced roster, with Lindsey Horan and Christine Sinclair both starting the game in the attack. Raquel Rodriguez offered a spark off the bench after Horan left the game in the 69th minute.
