The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has requested video footage and eyewitness statements from Wekiva High School officials after a football playoff game against Mitchell High of New Port Richey ended in a physical altercation involving numerous players.
The fighting began immediately after Wekiva (6-4) lost 24-18 on Friday night to visiting Mitchell (11-0) during a Class 7A region semifinal.
A Facebook video shows Wekiva players running across the field toward Mitchell’s sideline, where pushing and shoving occurred. Punches appear to be thrown by at least two Wekiva players and one Mitchell player.
Another video posted to Twitter by Orlando Sentinel freelance reporter Steven Ryzewski shows a person in street clothes throwing two helmets in the direction of a Mitchell player as he lies on the field.
