NASCAR’s sophomore class sets sights on breakthrough season

Cole Custer’s return last May to Darlington Raceway brought a flood of good memories for the 22-year-old, a winner there the previous summer driving in the Xfinity Series.

By day’s end, Custer had scratched out a 22nd-place finish. Three days later at Darlington, he finished two laps behind winner Denny Hamlin, in 31st place.

Bristol Motor Speedway, where he finished third in 2019, was no cakewalk either during Custer’s first trip back. He finished 35th.

“That was one I didn’t expect,” he said. “For whatever reason, it was a lot different in the Cup car.”

“There’s a lot of challenges and a lot of different things that I had to learn as a driver in my rookie year,” Reddick, 24, said.
