MEAC faces financial hurdles if more FBS leagues drop nonconference games

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference is facing daunting economic conditions as lucrative road games against Football Bowl Subdivision are getting canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The MEAC, which includes Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M for one more academic year, generates millions of dollars for its athletic departments through student fees, athletic fees and guaranteed football games.

When the Big Ten and Pac-12 announced they were moving to a conference-only football schedule for the 2020 season last week, the first Football Bowl Subdivision conferences to do so, it caused concern. If other leagues join them, FCS teams would lose a substantial amount of money they get in exchange for traveling to play FBS opponents.
