Hurricanes completely open up WR competition: ‘We’re trying to get more guys that can play’

The Miami Hurricanes sent a message with their Monday release of the team’s depth chart for Virginia week: It’s open competition at wide receiver, and anybody can now claim the starting spots.

At one receiver, the depth chart reads: Dee Wiggins — or Michael Redding III — or Keyshawn Smith. At another, it’s Mark Pope — or Jeremiah Payton — or Dazalin Worsham. In the slot, you have Michael Harley — or Marshall Few — or Xavier Restrepo. Nine receivers all in the running for three starting jobs.

“All we’re doing is changing the emphasis on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday will matter in terms of who trots out there for the first play of the game, first play of the second half,” Miami coach Manny Diaz said.
