Edgewater football coach Cameron Duke had a message for junior placekicker Alex Fernac ahead of Friday’s Top 5 matchup between Orange County teams.
“I told him earlier today, ‘I know you’re a great soccer player, but let me tell you something, you’re [also a great] football player’,” Duke said. “That’s how tough he is.”
Fernac’s 35-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter was the go-ahead score for Edgewater (4-1) during a hard-fought 16-7 win at Apopka (3-1).
Apopka, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the Sentinel Super 16, reached the Class 8A state semifinals in 2020 and finished state runners-up in 2019.
