Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday announced $64 million in funding to help improve student proficiency statewide, much of that aimed at reading gains.
DeSantis also announced that Brevard County will host the 2020 AAU Junior Olympic Games. The athletic event had been scheduled to be held in Hampton, Virginia.
The move for the 54th annual event is a boon to the Space Coast, which along with the rest of Florida has suffered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic shutdowns.
It will be the sixth times the AAU event will take place in Florida in the past 20 years, DeSantis said, adding the event brings up to $50 million to local economies where it’s held.
