Daytona International Speedway takes key first step with July 4 IMSA race

The last time race cars were in action at Daytona International Speedway, Denny Hamlin won his third 500 while Ryan Newman had a brush with death.

Nearly four months have passed since a sellout crowd witnessed one of the most dramatic, chaotic finishes in the Great American Race. This weekend, racing will return to the iconic track for the first time since the coronavirus shutdown.

The cars, track layout and crowd size will change dramatically, but Saturday night’s IMSA (International Motor Sports Association) Weathertech 240 is expected to be an important first step at the speedway.

“Every week’s pivotal,” track president Chip Wile told the Orlando Sentinel.
