Citrus Bowl notes: Longtime Northwestern defensive coach Mike Hankwitz retiring after bowl game

Mike Hankwitz is wrapping up a stellar career that’s spanned more than 50 years — the past 13 as defensive coordinator at Northwestern. His final game will be against Auburn in the Citrus Bowl Friday at Camping World Stadium.

A win over the Tigers would give the 73-year-old a part of 400 wins during a coaching career that began when he coached the junior varsity team at Michigan.

“It would be icing on the cake,” Hankwitz said of closing with a bowl win. “It’s been a labor of love and I’ve worked with a lot of great people, some great head coaches, and a lot of great young men, and that’s what’s made it so worthwhile.
