When five teams take the field for the first time this fall, the number of NCAA, NAIA and independent universities and colleges offering football will reach 774. At the NCAA level, an average of 4.9 schools have added the sport annually since 1978, according to the National Football Foundation, which in announcing the record total this week boasted that "no other sport contributes more to the vibrancy of a college campus.
