Timing, persistence helped Oregon State land freshman star Jermar Jefferson

CORVALLIS a It's the simple stuff that makes a running back, at least in the case of Oregon State's emerging star freshman Jermar Jefferson.

When Jefferson transferred high schools from Rodondo Union to Narbonne in Southern California for his senior year, coach Manuel Douglas noticed his newest running back had a few too many moves.

Douglas, who coaches one of the most successful high school programs in the Los Angeles area, had some advice. Make one move, put your foot in the ground and go.

The result was a breakout senior season, where Jefferson ran for 1,861 yards and 34 touchdowns, won numerous awards and had a flood of interest from college coaches.
