Oregon State weighing potential name change to Gill Coliseum, among 3 other campus buildings

CORVALLIS - Gill Coliseum, the hub of the Oregon State University athletic department, remains at the center of a naming controversy on campus.

This week, OSU president Ed Ray announced the creation of a workgroup made up of school faculty, staff and students to review the names of four on-campus buildings: Arnold Dining Center, Avery Lodge and Benton Hall and Gill Coliseum.

The group will work with the school's Office of Institutional Diversity and the OSU Architectural Naming Committee, conducting "a full and transparent historical review of these buildings and their namesakes."

"This review builds on a process first announced last school year and will engage the entire university community and OSU stakeholders to learn about and discuss these buildings and their names," Ray wrote in a statement.
