Oregon State interim Cory Hall used exuberance, competitiveness to quickly earn golden opportunity

CORVALLIS - Cory Hall was in his Corvallis home late on a Sunday night when his phone rang. It was Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes.

Gary Andersen would no longer be head coach of the Beavers football team, and Barnes wanted Hall in the interim role with six games left in the regular season.

"I felt like I got punched in my solar plexus," Hall said.

The call was part of a development that sent shockwaves through college football and left many unanswered questions. Two days after his first game as a Division I head coach, the moment still struck Hall as surreal.
