CORVALLIS – Jonathan Smith’s mantra throughout his first season as Oregon State football coach has been compete on Saturday, then improve during the upcoming week.
Most improvements by outsiders are measured in wins/losses and statistics. From that standpoint, a 2-6 record and many stats that rank near the bottom of the Pac-12 don’t look so hot.
While Smith isn’t blind to the record and statistics, it’s small, unnoticed areas of improvement that only a coach may see that are important to him. Make a lot of headway in the small stuff, and the big ones – win-loss record, statistics – will eventually follow.
