CORVALLIS -- Though Oregon State didn't announce the winner of its starting quarterback derby until six days before the 2018 season opener, offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren had a sense early on.

Jake Luton caught his eye midway through preseason camp, and didn't let off the gas until the coaches told the 6-foot-7 senior last weekend that he'd start against Ohio State in the 2018 season opener Sept. 1.

"I think maybe it was after that second scrimmage," said Lindgren, which took place Aug. 17. "We got into week two or three of camp and you could just tell when he was in there with the offense, we really kind of moved to another level.
