Oregon State-California football: Q-and-A with Bears' beat writer Jake Curtis

When you have 14 turnovers in three conference games, obviously it’s not just one thing. Eleven of those turnovers came in the second half, usually when Cal was playing from behind. The Bears are not built to play catch-up, so they are trying to do something that is outside their personality, thus mistakes. Eleven of the turnovers were committed by quarterback Brandon McIlwain, including three fumbles when he was sacked, indicating poor pass protection and poor pocket awareness by McIlwain. His eight interceptions were the product of receivers running the wrong route and McIlwain trying to do more than the situation or the defense allowed.
