Count Washington co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith among the many observers surprised by Gary Andersen's sudden split from Oregon State.

"I don't know Gary that well," Smith told reporters Wednesday in Seattle. "I've met him a couple times. Know a lot of people that know him. Have a great deal of respect for him. It was shocking to see that all play out."

Beyond that, Smith offered little to say about his alma mater.

Reporters asked Smith about the coaching transition at OSU, where he played quarterback from 1998-2001. The conversation naturally shifted to rumors linking Smith to the Beavers' head coaching job, which have come from numerous national outlets.
