Friends and compatriots, Marie Gulich and Satou Sabally are now Civil War opponents

CORVALLIS -- Six months after Marie Gulich and Satou Sabally shared a house outside of Berlin, they'll share a court Friday and Sunday, as friends and temporary adversaries.

The recent bond between Gulich, Oregon State's senior center, and Sabally, Oregon's freshman forward, took hold last summer as they played on the German women's national basketball team. For 10 days outside of Berlin, they and their teammates trained and lived together before competing in a pair of "friendlies" against Lithuania.

That experience, along with Gulich's help in attempting to recruit Sabally to Oregon State a year earlier, has provided a link between two of the most intriguing players in this weekend's pair of Civil War matchups.
