Saw that Mike Riley is coming back to Oregon State, this time as an assistant coach on Jonathan Smith's staff. Wasn't sure what to write about it, so I dialed up one of my newspaper mentors.
Asked the old goat, "What would you write?"
Then it struck me. We all need a mentor. Smith, in his first job as a head coach. will need one. He'll be able to speak into the headset on fourth and inches from the 40 and ask, "What would you do?"
The benefit of having Riley there is that he'll be calling upon a coach who made two tours in Corvallis, got a lot right and some wrong.
