Oregon State trailed Cal by 14 points when the teams last met in November. That is the smallest halftime deficit the Beavers have faced in their last five Pac-12 games. They have been outscored by a combined 161-23 in the first halves of those games, an average margin of nearly four touchdowns. There have been times when OSU has bounced back from slow starts to make games competitive by the fourth quarter but has still been playing from too far behind to close the gap. If the Beavers are to break their conference losing streak, now at 12 games, a major step would be not needing to fight such an uphill battle in the final 30 minutes.
