CORVALLIS - Kammy Delp was nearing kindergarten when his family moved from American Samoa to Southern California.
The Oregon State junior guard played high school football in Pomona, the city in the inland Pomona Valley that sits east of Los Angeles and has multiple smog inspection stations lining the town's main drag.
Nearby forest fires exacerbated air quality problems, which Delp said Tuesday helped prepare him for an outdoor football practice in Corvallis that caused more challenges for some of his other teammates.
"I'm used to it," Delp said. "But to other guys, it was kind of hard to breathe.
