SPOKANE -- The now-retired Blaine Newnham, who covered a lot of Northwest college football for the R-G and the Seattle Times, once offered some words of wisdom about projecting the future in college football.
"Just when you think you know," Newnham told me, "you don't."
I think Newnham's words apply to what is unfolding at Oregon. The Ducks have lost three straight. They are expected to lose their upcoming game to the hated Washington Huskies on Saturday in Autzen Stadium.
If so, it will be the first UW victory in Autzen since then-coach Rick Neuheisel brought the Huskies back out of the visiting locker room to dance on Rich Brooks Field following a 42-14 victory in 2002.
