Worlds Recap: Theisen, Rupp Start in Beijing

What Happened Day 1: Six-time NCAA Champion Galen Rupp finished fifth in 10,000-meter final on the opening day of the IAAF World Championships.Rupp, the 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist, was in medal position throughout and was running in third with one lap to go, sitting in the middle of a pack of five which pulled away from the rest of the competition. He was unable to contend with the closing speed of his four competitors over the final 200 meters and finished in fifth with a season-best 27:08.91, the fastest-ever by an American at the World Championships.

This is Rupp’s fifth consecutive top-ten finish in the 10,000 at the World Championships or Olympics.
