For the traditionalists, the decision to scrap the current iconic look is like a body blow.

Zach Silva of the Cottage Grove Sentinel grew up watching meets at Hayward. He writes losing the current Hayward Field and seeing designs of what will replace it feels "like a betrayal."

Those inclined to a -- and I'm treading carefully here -- Freudian interpretation of the world, see the shape of the planned Bowerman Tower on the track's southeast corner and the horseshoe shape of the stadium that is open at the southern end, are drawing their own conclusions about what the designers are intending to symbolize, either consciously or unconsciously.
