Should OSU Beavers' next coach take a page from Jerry Pettibone's playbook? Issues & Answers

Were Dutch Baughman and Jerry Pettibone ahead of the curve?

Tom Fornelli of CBSSports.com thinks so. Fornelli writes Oregon State's needs to turn to an option offense.

He doesn't mean the zone-read, like Chip Kelly installed at Oregon. Fornelli is talking about a wishbone derivative, such as the ones used by the service academies and Georgia Tech. He means a fullback, two halfbacks and a running quarterback.

Baughman, then Oregon State's athletic director, was thinking along the same lines when he plucked Pettibone away from Northern Illinois to be OSU's coach in 1991.

There is some logic to it.
