Knight, the Nike co-founder, spoke to the R-G's Austin Meek to explain why he became personally involved in the Hayward Field reconstruction project, and why he favored changing designs.
Hatfield, the famed Nike designer who came up with the original and since rejected design for the Hayward project, blasted the one preferred by Knight and unveiled by the University of Oregon in April.
