Did Hayward's east grandstand get in the way of a 9-lane track? Oregon track & field rundown

The official narrative being pushed by the University of Oregon is that Hayward Field's east grandstand is in such bad shape it makes sense to scrap it and start over.

Jim Petsche is project manager for the UO project to rebuild the 99-year-old stadium and replace it with something more modern. He makes the case for tearing down the east grandstand in this piece by Chris Hansen in this morning's R-G.

Lead paint, not seismically sound, mushy beams, leaky roof, decaying siding, cracking seats, uneven steps, inadequate concessions and restrooms. It doesn't sound good.

But like most things in life, perspective matters.
