Clayton Murphy missed record, but Track Festival was a good show: Oregon track & field rundown

The second night of the Portland Track Festival was promoted around a U.S. record-attempt at the 1,000 meters by Olympic 800 bronze medalist Clayton Murphy.

Meet organizers flew in Rick Wohlhuter, who set the record of 2 minutes, 13.9 seconds in 1974. Wohlhuter, who lives in Jacksonville, Florida, was helping hold the tape at the finish line on Sunday night.

Murphy came up short, crossing in 2:17.17.

"We knew we had both standards (800/1,500), so at this point it was just train and race," he said. "I wanted to get in a race. Obviously, we were hoping for a little bigger field to have a race setting.
