Canzano: Time for Oregon State president Edward Ray to put down the pom poms

Dr. Edward Ray is the second-longest tenured president in the Pac-12 Conference. He's also known as the loudest voice in the room when the Pac-12 CEO Group meets to discuss conference athletics matters.

More curiously though, Ray is the strongest supporter in the group of Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott.

That one is a head scratcher.

Consider that Oregon State is publicly funded. Also, that it's the most heavily subsidized athletic department among the 12 conference members. Oregon State's athletic department is carrying $40 million in accrued debt, and leans on the rest of Ray's campus in ways the others do not.
