Oregon Football: 3 Things To Watch For Tonight

The Oregon Ducks will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes tonight in the first National Championship Game in the new College Football Playoff system. Here's what to watch for tonight for Oregon to be successful and win it's first national title:

HOW WILL OREGON REPLACE DARREN CARRINGTON?

Heisman winner Marcus Mariota will be without his second leading receiver, Darren Carrington, who is suspended for this game after failing an NCAA-mandated drug test. Carrington was the star of Oregon's blowout win over Florida State in the Rose Bowl, catching seven passes for 165 yards and two touchdowns. He's been Mariota's security blanket at 6'2", and now he'll have to rely on this top three other receivers who are all under 5'10". Oregon probably won't take as many shots downfield with the size disadvantage, so look for more screens and short passes than normal from the Ducks.

START FAST, CONTROL TEMPO

The Ducks are well known for their fast-paced offense, but they're at their best when they're playing with the lead and are controlling the tempo. They've only been in two games that were decided by single digits, and one of those resulted in their only loss (Arizona). In both of those games, they struggled early and weren't able to dictate the pace of play.

Their offense is designed to wear opponents down, which was evident in their 41-7 second half advantage over Florida State. When their offense isn't rolling early, defenses can catch their breath and get Oregon out of rhythm. It's important for the Ducks to jump out to a fast start so they can control the tempo of the game.

FORCE TURNOVERS

Oregon's defense ranks 84th in the country giving up 421.9 yards per game, but rank 10th in turnovers forced. They've relied on a bend-don't-break defensive scheme that's worked for them, but the numbers show that Ohio State's offense can be successful if they can take care of the ball. The Ducks haven't lost a turnover battle yet this season, and have only one game where they committed multiple turnovers themselves (loss to Arizona). If their defense can force more than one turnover, Oregon will have a great chance to win.
