World champ Cheruiyot qualifies for Rio at Kenya trials

ELDORET, Kenya (AP) — World champion Vivian Cheruiyot has qualified for the Olympics by winning the women's 10,000 meters at Kenya's track and field trials.

Cheruiyot secured one of two automatic places in the event in Rio de Janeiro on Kenya's team. Betsy Saina finished second to also qualify and Alice Aprot was given the wild card place. That meant Sally Kipyego, the silver medalist at the 2012 Olympics, was the first big name to miss out on the opening day of the trials after finishing sixth in Thursday's 10,000 final.

World silver medalist Caleb Ndiku is preparing another shot at Olympic and world champion Mo Farah in Rio after winning the men's 5,000 meters.
