It didn’t take long for Venus Williams’ Summer Olympics to come to an end.
One day after being eliminated from the women’s singles competition, Venus and sister Serena were bounced from the women’s doubles tournament in the first round. The Williams sisters lost to Lucie Safarova and Barbara Strycova of the Czech Republic in straight sets Sunday, 6-3, 6-4. While Serena is still alive in the women’s singles competition after beating Daria Gavrilova earlier Sunday, Venus has played her last match in these Summer Olympics.
According to United States Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez, Venus played Saturday’s match while dealing with illness and one has to wonder if the ailment played a role in her productivity Sunday as well.
