Volleyball player has quirkiest serve ever

It’s time for the world to get to know Adrian Carambula, a beach volleyball player representing Italy in the Rio Olympics.

Carambula, you see, wields a serve known as the “skyball,” in which he turns around and bashes an underhand serve over his head with some spin. The ball seemingly travels to the moon, before it lands in the opposing side of the court.

Looks weird, but it works. Carambula took the Wall Street Journal behind the scenes of his serve before Rio and explained it gets opponents “off rhythm.”

As long as it’s working — he and partner Alex Ranghieri already won their first two Olympic matches — the skyball is here to stay.
