Venus Williams‘ bid to become the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era was denied by Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in the Wimbledon final Saturday.
Muguruza swept the 37-year-old American 7-5, 6-0.
Williams was bidding for her eighth career Grand Slam singles title and first since her fifth Wimbledon triumph in 2008.
Williams hoped to surpass her younger sister, Serena, as the oldest woman to win a Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era.
Serena beat Venus in the Australian Open final in January and then announced her pregnancy, taking the rest of the year off.
