U.S. speed skaters eager to put aside Sochi failure at PyeongChang Games

KEARNS, Utah — Sugar Todd and Mitch Whitmore planned to learn Korean together in preparation for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang South Korea. That goal might be out of reach already. They’ve focused on more lofty ones.

With the memory of a 2014 Sochi Games disappointment still fresh and the tack to prevent a reprise forefront in their collective mindset, the team has other objectives with seven months left until an opportunity for redemption.

The Americans entered the Sochi games with high expectations after dominating at the world championships but slumped as a group, with the long-track team failing to podium for the first time in 30 years, and the short track team capturing just a silver in the men’s relay.
