TOKYO — The cost of staging Tokyo’s 2020 Olympics Games could balloon to $30 billion — four times the original estimate — an independent panel of experts warned Thursday.
The Olympic investigation panel, which urged organizers to move or cancel at least three major new venues, are the latest blow to Tokyo’s plans for an “affordable, compact” Games centered around the city’s emerging waterfront district.
The panel's recommendations include cancelling plans to build new or temporary facilities for volleyball and swimming, and moving the rowing and canoeing competition to an existing facility about 270 miles from Tokyo.
