Tokyo Olympics, Day 1: The Games Get Rolling

The first 11 gold medals were awarded on Saturday, but with a twist: Athletes had to coronate themselves because of coronavirus restrictions.

The Syrian table tennis player Hend Zaza is believed to be the youngest Olympian in Tokyo — she’s 12 and according to Olympic officials was born in 2009. She lost to Jia Liu of Austria.

Windy Cantika Aisah of Indonesia took a bronze medal in weight lifting.

Shane Wiskus of the United States competed in the men’s gymnastics qualification round.
