To the Editor:
Re “Waters Most Foul at the Olympics” (editorial, July 31):
The Olympics have become corrupted, socially irresponsible and an environmental nightmare for each country that wins them.
Rio is just the latest fiasco, harming the country’s citizens, further degrading an already distressed environment and enriching the corruption schemes, both minor and major, that are common at such events. Rio seems to be a repeat of the Sochi mess but with way less government and financial resources.
As someone who had Olympic aspirations early in life and who thoroughly enjoys the Olympic spirit and competitions, I believe that this is an institution that needs to continue.
