Thailand wins gold, silver in women’s 58 kg weightlifting

Having already won two medals in weightlifting in these Olympics, Thailand claimed two more in the women’s 58 kg (128 lbs) weight class Monday.

Sukanya Srisurat, who established a new Olympic record in the snatch with a lift of 110 kilograms on her third attempt, won the gold medal with a total of 240 kilograms lifted. The Olympic record in the snatch was 108 kilograms, with China’s Li Xueying establishing that mark in London four years ago. Ranked fourth in the world coming into the Olympics, Srisurat’s Olympic debut has produced a gold medal.

Winning the silver medal was Srisurat’s countrywoman Pimnsiri Sirikaew, who lifted a total of 232 kilograms in the snatch and clean and jerk.
