Team USA’s Hammer takes silver in women’s omnium

Four years after taking silver in the women’s omnium, American cyclist Sarah Hammer duplicated that feat on Tuesday.

Hammer finished behind Great Britain’s Laura Trott in the race for gold, with Trott accumulating a total of 230 points to Hammer’s 206. Both scored 34 points in the points race, the final of the competition, with that being enough to secure a second consecutive Olympic gold medal in the event for Trott.

Taking bronze was Jolien D’Hoore of Belgium, who hung onto that spot despite tallying just 27 points in the points race. But better performances in the prior races helped her take bronze, with better points races by Lauren Ellis of New Zealand and Amalie Didericksen of Denmark.
