There’s a new Olympic champion in the men’s 100 meter freestyle.
Australia’s Kyle Chalmers, who turned 18 years of age June 25, won his first Olympic gold medal with a time of 47.58 seconds. This is Chalmers’ second Olympic medal, as he was part of the 4×100 free relay team that won bronze. Chalmers’ victory gives Australia its first gold medal in the 100 free since Mike Wenden won the event at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.
Chalmers beat out Belgium’s Pieter Timmers for the gold, with Timmers finishing in 47.80 to claim his first Olympic medal.
