Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom didn’t get off to the cleanest of starts in the women’s 100 meter butterfly final. But in the end it didn’t even matter, as Sjostrom won the gold medal and established a new world record in doing it.

Sjostrom, whose time of 55.64 seconds established the world record last year, completed the race in 55.48 seconds and won by nearly a full second. Winning the silver medal was Canada’s Penny Oleksiak, who earned her nation’s first-ever medal in this event with a time of 56.46 seconds. Dana Vollmer of the United States won the bronze medal with a time of 56.
