Simona Halep tops Sloane Stephens for first French Open title

Simona Halep is finally a Grand Slam winner.

The top-ranked Romanian outlasted American Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the French Open final Saturday, claiming her first title in her fourth Grand Slam final (and third at Roland Garros).

Halep, 26, became the second Romanian woman to win one of tennis’ four major tournaments, joining her manager, Virginia Ruzici, who prevailed in Paris 40 years ago.

She avoided becoming just the second man or woman in the Open era (since 1968) to play in at least four Grand Slam singles finals and go winless (Helena Sukova).
