Serena Williams advanced to the third round of the women's singles tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, defeating Alize Cornet in straight sets Monday, 7-6 (5), 6-2.
While Williams entered the match as the favorite to advance, Cornet has given her trouble lately. The two have split their six head-to-head meetings in WTA tournaments, with Cornet coming out victorious in the last three.
The 26-year-old is the last woman to beat Williams at Wimbledon, knocking her out in the third round in 2014.
As if gaining a measure of revenge against Cornet wasn't enough to motivate Williams, this was also her first match since her loss in the opening round of the women's doubles tournament.
